POG Position on DEIA Funding and Legislative Action

Educational Notice: This statement is provided for educational purposes only and is intended to offer information to our membership and the general public. It is not intended as legal advice or as a directive for policy implementation.

Introduction

At POG, we stand firmly in support of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) programs, which serve as vital resources for marginalized communities. These programs provide essential support, create opportunities, and foster the inclusion of voices that have historically been excluded from decision-making spaces. The recent funding pause of DEIA programs is not just an administrative decision—it is an act of harm that directly impacts the communities we serve. While legal interventions have temporarily restored some funding, the fact that this pause was enacted at all is unacceptable. We urge lawmakers to recognize the gravity of this situation and take decisive action to prevent further attempts to weaken these essential programs.

The Harm of the Funding Pause

The abrupt withholding of DEIA funding has already caused significant damage. Communities that rely on these programs for stability and opportunity have faced unnecessary hardship, and the uncertainty surrounding their future further exacerbates this harm. While courts have stepped in to block some of these actions, this should never have been necessary. The responsibility to safeguard these programs ultimately rests with legislators, who must take proactive steps to ensure that such funding remains secure and protected from future political interference.

Why This Matters

Cutting funding for DEIA programs is more than just a change in policy—it’s a deliberate attempt to roll back progress, silence voices from marginalized communities, and dismantle the support systems that help create a fair society. If these attacks are allowed to continue, they could lead to even more harmful actions that undermine fairness and justice. This issue isn’t only about money; it’s about protecting the future of our communities and our country.

Our Call to Action

We support lawmakers to take a strong stand against these funding cuts. The decisions made now will determine whether we build a more inclusive society or let fear and exclusion take over. Lawmakers must not only restore the funding but also put safeguards in place to protect it from future politically motivated cuts. This is a time for bold leadership and a firm commitment to justice.

Conclusion

POG remains dedicated to supporting and expanding DEIA programs. We call on elected officials to take clear and decisive action to protect these essential programs. Our communities deserve stability, respect, and the chance to thrive. We will continue to oppose any efforts that undermine the rights and dignity of marginalized groups. We encourage everyone who cares about these issues to speak up and help ensure that DEIA funding remains secure for generations to come.
